Jeff Bezos, The Washington Post, and Three Steps to Success

The Andy Borowitz satirical piece in the New Yorker about the Jeff Bezos purchase of the The Washington Post was hilarious.

But the joke might very well be on the pundits who, up until now, have had little success in figuring out how to drive profits from the reporting and delivery of newspaper digital news.

Mr. Bezos won’t be rebuilding a brand. He will be rebuilding a medium. I like his chances.

His approach sounds so basic, so simple, so commonsensical.

He’ll use the same three operating philosophies he used at Amazon. He slowly, surely and profitably transformed not only the online retail customer shopping experience, but the entire retail panorama with these branding basics:

Put the customer first.

Invent: build a team and give them the time and resources to work together and invent solutions to better serve those customers.

Be patient.

This will be an exciting process to witness. And there will be learnings here for all of us.
